# Resident Evil just had the best opening in its history.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil opened to $60 million in North America this weekend, the biggest debut across eight films. Three quarters of the audience was under 35, so yes, that was your friends.

The reboot from Zach Cregger, the director behind Weapons and Barbarian, earned $60 million from 3,684 theatres in the U.S. and Canada, according to the Associated Press box-office report on September 20. Austin Abrams stars as a medical courier who ends up in the outbreak.

Why it’s everywhere: horror is the genre that still gets young audiences into actual theatres, and the exit polls back it up. AP reports the crowd was 66% male and 75% under 35. Practical Magic 2 dropped to $12.2 million in its second weekend.

If you skipped the games: Resident Evil is the zombie franchise where a pharmaceutical company causes the apocalypse and everyone keeps opening doors they shouldn’t. Spoiler-free discourse is safe; the “would I survive” discourse is mandatory.

**Okay but settle this:** Outbreak hits your town. Your whole survival plan is “run.” Are you cooked?
