What does “brainrot” mean?

In casual internet slang, “brainrot” describes being very absorbed in a meme, fandom, phrase, or kind of online humor. Someone might say a sound has given them brainrot because they keep repeating it. It is not a medical diagnosis.

A lot of the humor comes from repetition, absurd combinations, and knowing the reference. Explaining the literal meaning may not explain why your group chat finds it funny.

You don’t need to know every reference. If a joke stops being fun, mute it, take a break, or start a new one. Missing a meme is not a problem to solve.

“I can’t read that sentence without hearing the sound. The brainrot won.”
